I have caught gills this year 5ft down in 14ft of water. It really took me by surprise too. Never expected a bluegill to be that high in the water column let alone suspending.

A little honey hole of mind will hold suspended gills all winter long. Only thing I can think of is it has to do with the oxygen levels and food source. A massive school of mix, gills and crappies suspended from 7-14 FOW in 17-18 FOW. I normally don't catch any on bottom in this place.

But, everywhere else, yes the gills are normally located on bottom just like the perch.  !<>!

A prime example of why a flasher is more usefu tool than fish TV.
Got into a discussion with a guy on another board and he claimed his little Fish TV was just as good as a flasher for much less money.
He just could not wrap his head around "fishing the entire water column".
The camera only shows what/or what is not, at the camera lense. Get some dirty water and you won't even see that!!!
A flasher will tell you if there is anything in the entire water column below your position.
The camera can be a tool but the flasher gives a larger picture of the area your fishing.
His other point of the cameras superiority was that he could see what type of fish was below him.
The flasher does too, right after I catch the fish it's indicating. I've caught many suspended fish my flasher indicated, that I would have missed otherwise.
This thread is a prime example of a flashers benifits.
If you don't know, don't pretend to!!!!
Show some humility and be willing to learn from others.
If you do know, be grateful and share with those who are where you once were!!

Yeah flashers are great, probably the best set up would be a flasher and a cam, but too much hi-tech
seems overkill, to each his own.

How bout some tips on how to go after the gills in weeds, thick weeds, weed patches, etc.

That's easy HD the only way to catch them in the weeds is by using the cam. and finder. The cam has it"s advantages and disadvantages.but you will never go wrong in having both..
