Book arrangement on lures
« on: November 17, 2019, 01:19:20 PM »
I'm new to ice fishing,so excuse me if some of my questions seem dumb but I would like to know what the best way to fish a lure like a rapala jigging rap is,and what if any bait to add to it.I know that fishing with baited treble hooks is illegal,so do you take off the treble hook on the rap.Is the rap then legal to bait with the 2 single hooks or can just 1 be baited? What is the best bait to use?

I believe that the jigging Rap would be legal in PA. The treble counts as one hook. 3 hook max on one line. Here in New York, we use full smaller minnows or head only on the hanging treble. Smaller raps, I have put spikes, maggots, on each of the treble hook points for yellow perch. Raps are a big part of my arsenal through the ice!

Thanks for your reply KingPerch, but I'm in N.H. and I know that the laws are specific involving baited treble hooks.I was wondering if anyone removed treble hooks on their rapala rap jigs.

I'm not from NH but if you remove the treble hook which you say is illegal, definitely replace it with a similarly sized single J hook, Maybe on slightly larger. That hook and the position it is in accounts for 90% of the hook up you will get with a jiggin rap type lure. Tip it with a minnow head or a grub and fish with gentle lift, and a slow freefall drop, pause and repeat. Try different jiggin patterns until you find some that work for you. Good Luck.

Sorry... I assumed you lived in PA. As FM mentioned... you can replace the treble hook with a single hook. I’ve done that on the days yellow perch are on fire. Quick removal of the hook, to get the lure back down quickly. Good luck and welcome to the site!!😎

I always take the factory trebles off my spoons and replace with large eye hooks. The large eye is important so the hook doesn't stick on the split ring and swings freely. Much better hook ups and hook removal. I also think it is a better presentation with a wax worm than a treble. Mark

Great tip Mark - thanks.  Do you have a certain brand/number/color that you like?

Looks like a winner.  Debating on size now.  Looks like I need to buy a box of 100
