is there a good way to do that once a lake is iced or do you have to do it in the fall?  i spent some time looking for weed lines from a paddleboard at PL this summer, but it's harder than it sounds.

Although I don't agree with the premise about walleyes. They can be found near weedlines along with bass, pickerel, callico, gill, and just about any other predatory fish. Fishing weedlines and weedbeds is a no brainer. Scouting like you were doing is a good way to find them but a paddle board might not be the best platform to do it from. A boat where you can use a gps mapping app like Navionics to mark, and save what you find, so you can return to the exact spot later when it is covered with ice and snow is a better idea. I had an opportunity to pick out weedlines up on Moon Lake this winter. I was using tip ups and getting no where in the deeper water. Reasoning that a move to the weed edges might turn up some action I used the pressure cracks as a window to see through the thin ice, everywhere else covered with snow, to find the edge. I just walked the cracks from shore and watched for the weeds to end and dropped my tip ups in at that point it worked for pickerel and a couple bass.

ah cool, good advice.  i should have mentioned that i had my deeper sonar on my paddleboard, GPS mapping everything as i went.  it is a super cool little device.
