Got Waxies?
« on: December 09, 2018, 03:46:25 PM »
Just sent off an order for 500 waxies. With my minimalist jigging that should do me for the season unless something changes and I get addicted to my new Marcum. Not likely though. I do like to have them on hand to play with when the tip up game slows down.

I keep them in the tub they came in in my cool basement. I found that the fridge kills them.

I’ve found the same with the fridge. My basement is usually in the 80s or even 90s because of the wood stove. So I’m still trying to figure out where to keep them that works with my setup.

Yea that's way too warm. Have a warmer garage? I'm guessing that my basement boiler room is at about 50°

The garage is detached from the house and not heated so it’s usually pretty close to whatever temp it is outside. The house I used to live at had an attached garage that stayed above freezing so that was nice. That worked great.  Guess I might just have to buy smaller quantities for now.

Here is the recommended way to keep waxies according to Grubco's info sheet. Store in same container with same bedding as they are received in at 55-65°. Cool basement is ideal, Keep bedding dry. No feeding necessary.

My experience is 50-55 is optimal and in a dark area if possible. I'm lucky to have a distributor 20 min away. First trip North I supplied three different buddies. I keep them in the basement near a drafty door on a cement floor. Also there is a thermometer next to them.

I have not tried this yet but I am thinking about trying the attic this year - might be 55 near the door to the stairs
