The end may be near
« on: February 11, 2018, 06:51:29 AM »
 Looking ahead at the long range weather forecast (NE Pa.)looks as though we may be in the final week of safe ice, or at least hard surface. With the exception of 1 or 2 days, the long range report indicates day time temps in the mid to high 40s for the next 2 weeks, which if nothing else will make for rough travel over ice. The nighttime temps only "near" freezing.  Seems most places I have been have 8-12" of ice, like yesterday there was about 10" at Harveys but what a chore going even 100 yards through 5" of snow/water. Looks like it will only get worse. I may have to head to upstate NY after this week. It was a great season for sure, perhaps one of the best for me in several years. Although being recently retied I was able to get out several days/week.

I agree. The forecast isn't great, but I don't think the fat lady is going to start singing just yet. And if we make it to March, that month can go either way weather wise. Last February felt like April, and then we got 2 feet of snow in the middle of March. I fished at Prompton yesterday, and although I didn't have a measuring tape, I would say that there's at least 16 inches of ice there. I would imagine that Belmont and Stillwater have similar stories.........    8)

Pretty decent........lots of nice Gills, a couple calico. Also got a few pickerel and two smallmouth bass. The snow made things tough.......... especially that awful haul up the hill from hell at the end of the day. LOL :o

Hope it's better for you guys than it is here. Was in Calamity Bob with two other guys and we went in the lake Saturday night. Not the fat lady, rather Jim Morrison singing, "This is the end,"  :'(

We were riding back to the launch about 8:30 PM. Fog thick as it can be so the lights didn't help us see the open water on the right until too late and kersplash! The ice along the open water broke on our right side so in we went. My gear in Calamity Bob was fine, however, we were towing the two other guys stuff in jetsleds. The jetsleds went to the bottom like rocks, but the water was only 3-5 feet so we were able to fish them and all the gear out. The machine was able to climb back out pretty easy, once the other two guys hopped out on the good ice. Once in the lake per season is enough for me.

It's a Wilcraft, I don't have a good photo to share since photogreed stopped allowing third party posting. I went in a lake, first ice, the week I got it five years ago, in 40 fow. That was a hoot. It climbs out by retracting the wheels and backing up onto the ice. There are videos on their website somewhere that show the process;

For you PA guys, I strongly suggest scrolling down a little on the homepage and reading the headline.  >:D ;D

That Wilcraft looks like fun but it probably cost more than my car.   By the way,  Prompton is hardened up and walkable today.    Fishin is good, catchin kinda sucks though.
