Most valuable gear

I'm interested to hear what everybody's opinion is on this. What is your favorite or most indispensable piece of gear you have? Maybe it helps put more fish on the ice, or just makes your time out there easier or more enjoyable.

My Tahoe, it all starts and ends with your transportation. Warm boots and clothes, sharp blades on my augers, and lively bait!

Great answers. Never really thought of my vehicle as part of my gear but it seriously is. Especially living south of the action.  It seems like I've been missing a key part of gear that I might have to add this year.. Fireball! Lol

I just thought of a good one... especially for anyone venturing out this weekend.  Ice spikes, don't forget yours.

A great question, with some great responses. It's difficult to pin down one item specifically, but I would have to agree with FM that healthy lively bait is pretty critical, especially for walleye and Pike. I've been out and about rounding up some fresh bait this week in preparation for first ice, which will hopefully occur soon 8)

I would also have to say that my flasher is a critical piece of equipment, although it cannot make fish bite...it certainly eliminates a lot of the guesswork.

Last year, I got the Ion battery powered auger and I have to say that it's one of the best investments I've made. It's relatively light and makes fast, efficient work of thick ice. It definitely keeps me mobile and efficient on the ice.

Lastly, I think it's fair to say that your own body is overlooked, but important. Ice fishing truly is a physical sport.....dragging a sled, chasing after tip ups, etc, etc. Being in half decent shape isn't critical , but it certainly helps.

Good luck to everyone! Be careful. No fish, however tempting, is worth your life.

My life jacket when the ice isn't too thick.  I hope I only have to wear it and never have to use it!
