Heat wave followed by snow= danger
« on: January 23, 2017, 01:32:10 PM »
Just a reminder to guys that may venture out soon..  from reports that I have been given/seen and experienced myself a large number of our local lakes took a pounding with this past warm spell and rain.
Now we are supposed to get snow.  Could be a little but could be alot.  This snow is going hide any dangers that were created by the previous warmth and make the ice more dangerous.  It is also going to insulate the existing honeycombed ice and do 2 things.  It will prevent a refreeze and also cause water temps to slowly eat it from the bottom up.

If we get enough snow it could weigh the ice down enough to force water on top that will be absorbed into the snow and hopefully freeze and create more ice.

I'm hoping we get nothing or very little snow.  Please use extreme caution.

Last I saw the still had a winter storm watch out for pike Wayne and susquehanna counties for 5 to 10 inches of heavy wet snow.    I am hoping we get nothing.   But I'm not a weather man or a fortune teller.

We just keep getting rain down here in the South. >:( Our ice, what little there was, was doomed anyway. Only positive is the streams were super low and the series of rains we are getting has been slowly building the water table. Many places still haven't caught up from the extended
drought last year.

yeah, we got about an inch of sleet and rain/snow mix. It's gonna warm up and probably melt some of this off in the next couple days but the weekend is supposed to get back to cold temps.... just don't know for how long.

I saw the same thing- hope they are right! They say temps next week (1/30-2/4) will stay in the 20's!(lows in single digits and low teens) Then highs in the low 30's after that for much on Feb.
