Pretty little fish...
« on: January 20, 2017, 09:11:12 AM »
Got my smallest laker the same day I would of got my biggest laker.  Really pretty fish.  I've never seen a juvenile laker before but are the vermiculation on the backs usually like this.

They, lakers are closely related to brook trout. Both members of the char family, not true trout. They are mixed artificially to produce splake.

Judging by the forked tail and vermiculation on the back, I would consider this fish to be a splake (hybrid brook/lake trout).  These do occur naturally and in some places they are stocked.  Not sure if any stocking of splake occur in PA.  If you look too, you see some lighter blue spots of which lake trout do no possess.  It's a beautiful fish nonetheless and a very cool that you caught it.  Was it kept or released?

I was considering the posabilities of splake.  But I'm pretty sure it's a young lake trout.  I think the tail is to deeply forked for splake.  I don't think splake have ever been stocked in pa and the only lakes currently stocked by the state with lake trout are lake Erie and rays town.  The lake I got this and other lake trout has not been stocked in at least half a century.      It is stocked with bows, browns and tigers.  Only  brooks that get stocked are strays.
