Today on Pocono Plateau
« on: January 01, 2017, 07:58:31 PM »
The bite was slow today. Could call fish in with a rattling forage spoon but they would not commit. Caught some on the smallest forage minnow tipped with a waxie and small tungsten jigs. Biggest perch was 14" but I will wait for a bigger one to enter contest :). Fish were hugging the bottom today and reluctant to hit not matter the cadence to dead sticking. Got sloppy around the holes. 4 to 5 inches of ice. Mark

Nothing like being on the ice..

14 incher

Day's end..

Good fishing Mark! I hit a small lake in the DE. state forest and basically took my sled for a nice walk. ::) Ok, I did catch a few small gills. Then dropped back to my favorite gill lake and took home my usual quota. Fish were super negative and  MJ and Schooley dead sticks ruled the day. (again) Brief bite right at dark where I jigged up three nice gills on as many hits; all released since the I already had what I came for. The ice got really sloppy and what had been a solid 5" a week ago was 3.5" and there was water being pushed up through the hole making a mess. Also so nasty gray areas that were really slushy.
Sloppy ice

Two dinners worth

A nice gill

Slush; but very near the  area I wanted to fish. I choose not to slog all the way out there even knowing I would likely do better. Not worth the risk on a sunny above freezing day. There was a similar patch near shore and I did not enjoy walking through it. Real cold coming back later this week. !<>!

Fred, nice batch of gills. The ice was getting messy for us as well. I'm done until we get another freeze. Back to the grind tomorrow anyway. We need to get Rich and you out for the day. You boys would get along good. I also had a negative fish mood and tough bite. Did catch a bunch of largies but they go back. Since I have a few minutes today I figured I would post the baits from yesterday. Note that I change the treble hooks out for the mustads in the picture. Much better performance with hook ups and using wax worms or plastics. Let's hope this cold weather comes later this week!  Mark

nice haul buddy! That one perch looks like it swallowed a football!!

I still got that forage minnow you gave me a couple years ago up on PL. I had it tied on this weekend and it still catches fish!  ;)
When Hell freezes over, I'll ice fish there too!

Just  crossed from Blakeslee to the junction of 80 and 380. 34 degrees. All the  rain and drizzle is freezing on the trees dragging the smaller birches right over to the ground.  Surreal looking.
