6" vs 8" Nils...
« on: February 24, 2016, 07:15:29 PM »
Looking at getting either a 6" or 8" Nils hand auger.  Which should I go with?  How big of a fish can come through a 6 and if I ever do get a vexilar will a 6 be sufficient?  I fish mostly for panfish, but we do get/target bass, pickerel, etc. and would love to get into some walleye or trout.  Thanks for the help!

6in hole is plenty ...I have both and believe me even with good-decent head 8in with a foot of ice is a shoulder ache waiting to happen...not to mention the price of replacement heads....if you have the money buy the replacement head with your purchace...although mine lasted better part of 7yrs ...you will be happy to know one is in the garage when u do need it...last yr I needed one and sold out till end of season

The reason I ask is that I could get the 6" Nils on sale online with a tonight only coupon for $95.99 no tax and no shipping.  I figured I would ask.  Thanks.

if you use a flasher the 8 inch hole might be better for the transducer.  but a 6 should be good.  i use a 7 actually

6 is plenty, although I use an 8 when I go from hand crank to electric.  If you want a little space for the sonar cable and ducer, drill a second hole, I do that a lot.  I hate it when my line gets tangled in the ducer cable.

I had both...sold the 8".... 6" is plenty for jigging and vex....smaller(length) and lighter than 8.....but you'll  want an 8" if you use tipups and get a 20lb channel cat on!  It's a trade off

its hard to beat the American made steel of the nils augers.  they are pricey but its the toughest on the market

exactly I drilled 3 holes in a triangle pattern top one for my electronics other two for jigging so I never have to take it out or loose fish do to the tangle

I use a 6" auger right now for all my fishing. It works and I haven't caught a panny, bass or pickerel I couldn't get through the hole. But if I had the chance to pick up a nils 8 inch I would go for it. It would be my primary auger and the 6" would be my back up.
When Hell freezes over, I'll ice fish there too!

I also use a 6" you would be surprised how big a fish you can get through that hole , I only jump up to an 8"  if I'm fishing lakers or big eyes
