ATV / Snowmobile Safety

As a newbie ATV owner who will be using his new toy for ice fishing I'm very interested in hearing about your experiences and some of the dos and don'ts involved in their operation. I'll start off by asking how much ice do you personally require to feel safe?

I like 8" of good ice.  Been on 6" with no problem.  My rig, with tracks installed and loaded with gear is getting near 1200 lbs., add me and another fisherman and we are over 1500 lbs.  A winch is nice in case you get stuck - carry a recovery bar, cahin and strap, drill a hole in the ice and you got an anchor point.  On tires, I'd think about tire chains; used to run them on all four.

Great ideas! I thought of chains and will be getting a set for the rear wheels at least. The idea of drilling a hole to get an anchor point is priceless. One question what is a recovery bar?

take 12" piece of pipe/angle iron and weld an eyelet in the middle and a 4 foot piece of chain attached at eyelet. On one end of the pipe drill a hole and attach a long piece of rope, this lets you lower the pipe into the drilled hole, when pipe is below/under the ice pull the chain up which pulls the piece of pipe up to the bottom of the ice and attach your chain to your winch and winch yourself out. Make sure to hang on to your rope and or chain when lowering or picking up or your anchor will be gone. All made from spare parts hanging around the shop!!

You can buy one of those anchors that have the "fold out" anchor arms.  You stick it down the hole, the anchor unfolds and gives a good anchor poit.  It has a hole on the bottom end for a line which cause it to fold back up when retrieved.  Too much weight for me and too much $$ for my stingy methods.  8)

Well I ride a lot . Either on ice in the woods dirt bike ,quad ,snowmobile, side by side you name it I've rode it like I've stolen it . And plan on getting my own sled this season for the ice . But for fm my question is what kind of 4 wheeler did you get ? Brand ? What size engine (cc)? Also to clear out a spot for your shack just take the quad turn the Handel bars all the way to the left  lean a lot and let her rip to make perfect donuts haha .
How am I suppose to be old and wise if I'm not young and crazy ?

Those are personal water craft anchors phil. Jet ski operators use them.

Another point I would like to pass along to FM....check your state regs on towing behind that machine of yours. Here in NY, we can tow anything with a rope only, unless people are being towed behind it. You will need a rigid tow for that purpose. Snowmobiles in NY, need a rigid bar at all times...gear or people being towed!

And wear a helmet ! Since this is a safety thread . But yeah I know what you mean kingperch , like it's suppose to be a tow bar so ,if you had a rope and your towing your cargo doesn't slam into your machine right?
