2/19/12 Trip Report
« on: February 19, 2012, 07:02:15 PM »
We had Ben and his son Armondo from Cape Cod today. Two really great guys! A nice relaxing day with fish and jokes thrown in. Mid-day was slow again and while we were sitting around jigging to pass the time Armondo hooked into something BIG! The thing was stripping line off like you read about. When he finally got it to the hole out comes a 2lb hornpout. You should have seen his face! It was awesome. They had a great time and went home happy. They are already making plans to return next year.

Armondo with the pout.

Armondo and his dad.

First fish of the day.

Stick around you'll probably see something strange come out of the hole.  Oddfish

The picture is blocked here at work. I'm trying to figure out what a hornpout is...LOL

Its a lot like a catfish but they dont get nearly as big. common in N.H. but not so much through the ice.

Its almost hard to find a body of water hear that they dont exsist in. (at least in my area.)

Yep, that is correct.  It is a Black Bullhead, or Pout, or Horned Pout.  It's NH most common catfish.  Lots of them around, but they are semi dormant in the winter.  However, if you rap them on the head with some bait or a jig they will eat it.  I usually get a couple during the season, but that one is a monster they usually go a pound or less.  Darned good eats too!

Ok. We have lots of bullheads around here. I hate those things. They seem to be unable to take a bait without swallowing the hook!
