Title: Early morning bite
Post by: CaptSpike on January 31, 2016, 03:38:35 PM
Hit Greenwood lake this morning early. Walked out with my head lamp on only to discover another person already out there with a head lamp on. This is a small place and later I realized he was stacking claim of an area for a large group that showed up later. I was able to get to where I wanted to go and opened up a few old holes with my chisel. The first hole I settled into was stacked with fish. I proceeded to put a hurt on them. As I continued to release the small typical sized crappie we catch here I started to get into some rather decent 10+" crappie. I ended up icing 7 fish to keep and returned everything under 10".

Hot lures were the expedition alien jig in pink with a pink Jamie _____ plastic. After snapping that off (a result of using 2lb test leader...) I pulled out my "Jamaican" jig which is a clam duckbill drop jig with the Jamaican flag colors.  I tipped that with a White Jamie.  Those two lures brought big time bites, drop and pop as they say. As the sun came up so did the people and I continued to pound crappie and yellow perch with a few bluegill and pickerel thrown in. I'll have to say I lost count there were that many. I did make a short video highlighting how good the early morning action is here. I'll post up the link when I get done editing it. By 8:30 my water had become infested with yellow perch (typical) and the water I needed to go to was populated with some late comers. So I packed up and called it a day. It was everything I thought it would be and then some.

Only 4" of ice, so after this weeks warm weather and rain I'd be very careful about heading out in the lower half of the state, no matter how small the pond is.

A look from the access point:(http://www.nhanglers.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/IMG_13511.jpg)

Good luck if you get out.

Oops - didn't realize I had jumped to NH ice fishing.  Sounds like a Great Lake but a little far from me here in PA

Yeah I wouldn't recommend you PA guys make the trip for this lake. So many better ones, they just don't have safe ice yet :(
