Title: Optimal ice making conditions?
Post by: PackMan111 on January 11, 2019, 09:16:49 PM
Hey Everyone,

As anyone in the Pocono, PA area knows for sure it's been crazy windy.

I was curious if you guys have a general rule of thumb as to how high of a wind ice can start to form in.

For example, if it's 15 degrees but wind with 10 MPH gusts - will water "skim up"? What about 15 MPH?

Wind can really mess things up. Even if you get some ice forming the wind will push it down the lake into a pile along the shore. Last night Frances Sloum lake froze over in the shallower and more sheltered side but the wind blew the ice off the deeper open section. Even there a smaller spot that is out of the wind got iced over. The wind os slacking off and things will look a lot different by this time next weekend. Meanwhile get out and check some spots you may find some. Lower Promised Land State Park or some of the coves on Upper Promised Land might be decent tomorrow.

Just got a nice pic of a private lake (90 acres) that iced over; probably last night. I was surprised since it is north of Stroudsburg but not at real elevation, and it has been windy for three days. I'm two hours South but still it's looking good for some ice in the near future. Could even be possible for us to get some ice in the Southeast. ::) Dead clear and 23 here and the wind is down. Be safe everyone especially on older ice the refroze.

Van... they(fools) have been on Peters since the 16th. Supposedly 3"... a guy went over later and posted a video on F/B... 1-2 whacks with his spud and he was through. He called it closer to 2". I'm sure it is 3" or a little better since. Probably packed this morning with the storm coming.

I hear you; thanks for the update. My money would be on Antietam to be safe by now, but since I fished Thurs. I'm stuck at home. Almost checked it on my way North but it is quite a bit out of my way and Peters wasn't even on my back up list. A real shame about this weather coming! That said we might be better off than up North if we don't get too much rain. Back to back night in the single digits might just lock up whatever  ice is left.
