6.22.10 Susky Finally
« on: June 22, 2010, 06:28: PM »
Well I finally found the river clarity to my and more importantly to the Smallies likings today. I fished a spot close to home, no secret, but we have a member who likes to "out" my spots so I'll leave the revealing to him. lol I walked up stream about a half mile then waded back tossing a Thomas, spinner a Joes fly and an x-rap. The Thomas out fished all, the Joes fly had one and the x-rap earned a  <8= . When I first got to the water I took a pic up river and as I lowered the camera saw a movement way up the shore. I immediately thought fox, and watched the bouncy slow (doglike) trot that they exhibit, setting in my mind the correctness of the foxiness of the critter. A cat would have had a smoother gait. As it made its way surely but unhurriedly up the shore and out of sight I zoomed my camera and took a shot hoping that I could get into the pic with Phiotoshop and figure out the ID later. I walked up the shore in the critters path watching the mud for any telltale tracks. There were loads of fresh tracks and I got some pics. On the way back I got a few medium small fish. And was joined on the water by a few other anglers. My adventures were not done I hit another sopt and although I went fishless here I did see the fox/coyote den with the small skull at the entrance. On the way home I stopped at one of my local trout filled culverts and caught one to see if they were brookies or brownies. These were brook trout as you can see. Still on the way home I took turn down a new (to me) dirt road and caught, photoed and released the spotted turtle that is posted in the critters board. Also saw twin spotted fawns and a velvet buck plus a couple does here and there as I drove home.
enjoy

I'd like to take a crack at what the critters tracks you posted, in order:
4 toes - grey fox hind foot
5 toes muskrat
2 toes - deer;
paw on rock - coyote;
5 long fingers - beaver;
wet marks on rock - grey fox hind foot
pointy paw in mud grey fox paw
3 toes - herron
wet spot on rock - where you sat down
dot in sand - your beer cooler
sorry I'm gettin silly!
By the way, where did you see all the critters; I'd like to invite my scout pack there to explore the terrain.
