River Monster
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:56: AM »
My kids have become River Monsters addicts! I have to tape it for them to watch every week now. Not that it is bad it gets them involved and seeing other parts of the world and learning stuff that helps them in school. Yesterday we hooked a river monster in the Susky. I was trying to catch some cats with them but the action was "0" so I switched from livers to crawlers hoping to get a smaller channel, a rock bass or a carp, anything for some action. It was a long wait but finally one of my Ambassadors started clicking just like on the show. It quickly picked up the pace and by time I got to it the line was screaming off the reel. I tightened up and set the hook into a monster carp. Here's a preview most of my pics are still waiting to get processed and uploaded. I'll get to it tonight.

Here's a little slide show from Sunday. Lots of carp pics! I'm happy to have caught it best tug on a line I've had in a few years.

That is a monster carp, that big, no matter what size tackle you are using, you're going to have a battle on your hands.  !<>! All the pictures in the slideshow are awesome, glad to see the kids out enjoying the day too.  :)=

Like I said that was the best fish I have had on in a long time, years! I hooked and almost landed a second one the same day. The hooked ripped out of its mouth while I was horsing it down the shoreline to a landing spot. The second fish was a even better experience. I was watching the rods this time and saw the take. I now know that I had been seeing carp takes all morning and thinking they were small catties. This time I picked up the rod and at the next little nibble set the hook hard and had one. Again a blistering drag burning run. Very powerful. I learned some stuff about still fishing for them and will be trying it again soon. The only other fish that can come close to that power in this part of the river is a big musky.

Wow, river monster indeed!  What pound test did you have on?  I wonder if it would be possible to get one on a fly rod.

They definatly do get them on a fly. I think ZG has done it. As far as those rod and reels go they are heavy duty for big catfish and they take a beating. I have 12 or 14 on one and still have thirty from last summer at the shoere on the other. When I go back I'm going to scale back a bit but will probably stop at 10 lb.

I rigged 8-10 lb test on the fly rod for the river the last couple years, a fish that size would be a challenge for sure.

That fish reminds me of the one a guy caught ice fishing, it was as big as his kid.
