Since I'm using large hooks 5/0 and bigger I use the same stones I sharpen my knives with. I start behind the barb and work towards the point. I try to get a triangles shape but most of the time they end up rounded. I always try to sharpen the hooks right out of the package.

a small hook sharpener that hangs on my vest. it has a groove built into it that you run the point of the hook through.

When I lived a block from the beach I would use a nice file to sharpen the hooks on my Bomber Long A's. The size of them maed it a simple task. With the little hooks I use most of the time freshwater fishing I find it not an issue very often , but I have a load of rapalas and such that have been used and are slightly corroded. I'm interested in touching them up.

for trebles like the ones on rapalas, you can hold the hook at the base with needle nose pliers, and just use a small hand file on the hook points.

I have a small diamond file(looks like a pen). it has a round side /hook groove plus a small flat side works good for everything except I keep losing it. have to check the ice gear.
