Getting the Itch by HenryDavid

Late winter can be a drag, ice is melting, but not yet enough to fish many lakes.  The signs of winter are still around and rivers and streams run high and cloudy.  Still it always brings the urge to at least get "ready" for the upcoming rite of spring, Trout Season!

While many anglers spend their time marking their calander for opening day and sorting out their gear there are a few among us that just can't seem to wait.  Many special regulations areas on Pennsylvania streams offer year round fishing opportunites.  After March 1st "approved" trout streams are closed to fishing, that is except a few.  Catch and release, artificial lures only, fly fishing only, but they are open, and they do hold trout.

March Madness can be more than basketball.  All of these waters are easily located by checking the Pennsylvania Fish Commision web site.  Read the regulations carefully and if you have questions or doubts take the time to call the local office before heading out.

To me there's few things more enjoyable than walking or wading a trout stream, you can find something new around every bend.  Early season waters run high and fast so being wary and respecting the water is essential.  With cold water temps the trout can be slow but they still do feed and you might be pleasantly suprised by early season action.  Fishing deep and slow is recommended.  One thing for sure, you won't have to wait til opening day!

I agree with your sentiment about walking along a trout stream.

To be honest, I prefer the early spring and late fall seasons.

No bugs, snakes or heavy duty bushwhacking required...
