Backroad Smallies
« on: June 24, 2009, 10:18: PM »
Since the river is hanging in there with the high and muddy conditions that resulted form last weeks torrents I had to seek out some quieter waters to satisfy my "Tuesday is fishing day" routine. I decided to head deeper into the wilderness of Wyoming County and check the smallie action on the same susky trib that I have been exploring this year. The wildlife and the weather couldn't have been more cooperative. I had a few nearly dead clippers left and they were soon used up. I tried some smaller crank baits but found the best action with a gold Joe's Fly with red and yellow tail feathers. The merganser mother in the first pics had an impossibly large clutch and I'm wondering if she had assumed responsibility for some orphans. There were close to 20 ducklings skittering down the crick when I first approached. The concrete abutment is the remnant of a bridge that succumbed to hurricane or flood about 10 years ago. The other bridge is still in good condition for fishin.

Great pics, that bridge looks familiar.  Was that a Joe's Flies Spinner, did you get hungry and take a bite out of that smallie or what?

I'll fill in the blanks tomorrow. I had it all done once and it got lost oI . I don't have the desire to go and write it all again tonight.

I work with kids who have Autism.  I took a kid who I worked with to swim right where you were fishing every day last summer.  I will be going back with a pole!

OK I have some time and I have some energy left. This is the jist of what I wrote last night.

Nice pics again. You might want to try a Mepps #2 Thunder Bud red dressed for smallies. Check out Mepps.com
