Rod storage at home
« on: April 05, 2009, 11:20: AM »
Have any of you come up with an ingenious way to store your fishing equipment when not in use, specifically fishing rods?  I'm in the middle of spring cleaning my garage and am building some more shelves and such.  I keep having to work around my fishing equipment and need to get it more organized.  I'm looking at either building a verticle rod holder along one wall or one to suspend them from the ceiling.  Before I go reinventing the wheel what does everyone else do that has worked out well for them?

I have one of those round floor model rod holders. Don't like it much. It's hard to get the rods in and out of it. Having in a room you can dedicate to storage is key. Being able to keep the little ones is the challenge. Good Luck

I had one that worked great before I moved in 1987 it was built onto the wall of the entry shed of my mobile home but I sold the shed rather then moving it.  It was about 7 1/2 ft tall (floor to ceiling) and about 2ft deep and 2 1/2ft wide it had 2x4's on the bottom drilled about 3/4 of the thickness with the holes about 4 or 5 inches apart. The upper holder was done with 1x4 scalloped 4 or 5 inches apart up about 3 or 4 ft, and had Velcro to hold them in, it worked great was a nice rod vault I think I am going to build one when I build my new shed in the next couple of months.
Everythings better when you do it deeper.  Bobber down!!

Here's a nice holder I bought years ago. It's made by Berkley. Can't remember where I got it. It's nice for smaller rods and reels. I think I got it from Bass Pro. Hope this helps.

I have two methods. PVC is one. Grab a tube and put your rods in. Thread the ends and cap. Virtually indestructable. Now for my high dollar stuff. I waited till I saw some furniture sitting for free along the road. Took the cushions and removed the padding. Built a quick box, insert padding cuty to size. Holds expensive rod and reel with no movement at home or in vehicle.

Thanks for the input guys, I started building a vertical rack in the garage this afternoon.  Just used some leftover lumber from other projects and some screw in hooks.  Takes up very little space, I'll snap a pic when it's done.

I like the PVC idea also, I made a rod carrier for my icefishing sled out of PVC with milled slots for the reel seats that hold 7 rods.  I'm thinking of building a roof rack for my rods out of PVC that will mount to the luggage rack of my Trailblazer.
