Susquehanna Morning 3.12.06
« on: March 13, 2006, 09:27: PM »
What a great start to the open water season. I was out to get some walleyes before the end of the season, little did I know the smallies would be on the rampage. Lost count of how many, and gave up takin' pictures after a while too. How many pictures of my hand with a smallie in it could you take? Towards noon and after coultless smallies I did get a couple small walleyes. Ran out of bait and it was lunch time anyway so I took a break and got ready for round two WALLEYE TIME. So anyway here are the pics from the morning.

Susquehanna Afternoon 3.12.06

So, after downing a sandwich and grabbin' some nice fatheads to use for meat on my jigs I took off to the North. It is always nice to get into someones backyard and make a big score and that is just what I did. After trying a couple of the more prominent places to fish in the Meshoppen area I played my ace in the hole, a little bitty eddy thght to the bank featuring deep water and a 90 degree river bank. On my second cast I hooked a whopper walleye, played it to the shore then the hooked popped out and I tried to grab the fish with my still weakened right hand. I couldn't pin her down and she wiggled free and got into the water. One more try to stab/grab her but she escaped. Next cast I hooked another not as big but an dandy walleye. If I hadn't just lost the big one I would have been beaming in the photo, as it is I am still pretty pissed. so I stayed at this spot till 5pm and got 2 more nice fish, missed a couple others, not bad for an unlikely place that gets passed by over and again. Here are the pics from the afternoon.

Last chapter. I started towards home but, before I gave it up I made one more stop at one of the spots I had been gettin' the smallies at earlier. I wanted to set up for channel cats, but I was stunned to fine about 10 vehicles where I would usually find one or none. I grabbed my bait,  jiggs and rod and found a spot to fish almost stepping on a guys fish as I made my way to the water's edge. I fished but it was just fun watching all the other guys getting fish. I did catch a tiny carp I never saw one so small, (8"). The guys next to me had one nice walleye and I watched them hook and land a 26 or 27 inch one that I photographed for them. I tried to fish for cats after it got dark and most of the fishermen had gone but my heart wasn't really in it anymore I was spent and totally satisfied with the outcome of the day. The coup de grass was administered by a pair of rare buttholes in a over powered boat. It was well after dark when these guys came blasting up the river outta nowwhereand pulled right over my lines, All the whole flashing a 5,000,000 candlepower spotlight in the water. "How's it going" they asked. Lucky I don't own firearms. Last pic is of my new friend and his biggest walleye to date.
